In a fun, judgment-free, there-are-no-mistakes environment, you will learn several textile techniques including painting, printing, stamping, and more. We'll be working with non-toxic water-based textile inks that can be applied in many ways.

Vive Handmade is created out of a deep connection to the energetic aspects of color and its ability to uplift and inspire us.

Working with water-based dyes on natural fabrics is endlessly interesting, improvisational and alive. Fiber, dye and water molecules meet in a spontaneous dance and colors emerge, merge and blend in exciting, serendipitous ways. There is an invitation to become a co-creator as intentional craft processes are applied to the alchemy of dye meeting cloth.

This series of events will feature a unique format -- three exhibitions in one space. Vignettes: one venue; three exhibitions will combine celebrations of the noted wood sculptor, Dorothy Gill Barnes and famed weaver and surface designer, Glen Kaufman, with An Abundance of Objects, featuring baskets, ceramics and sculptures by more than three dozen international artists.

An Artist’s Reception and Opening will take place on Saturday, Oct 7th, from 11 am to 6 pm.

Vignette 1: Dorothy Gill Barnes: A Way With Wood

Dorothy Gill Barnes: a Way With Wood will celebrate the work of the renowned sculptor, known for weaving bark, transforming natural materials, and for her collaborations with glass artists, resulting in objects that mix glass and bark and branches in intriguing ways. Among Barnes’ innovations were dendroglyphs, markings she’d make on live tree bark, which she allowed to develop into “scars” for months or years before har- vesting and using the resulting bark “drawings" in her works.

Vignette 2: Glen Kaufman: Elegant Eloquence

Glen Kaufman: Elegant Eloquence highlights the work of this master weaver who created photo collages, using a Japanese technique to apply gold and silver leaf atop intricately woven damask fabric, often in a grid, to reflect disappearing Japanese architecture. Also included are examples of Kaufman’s early work, which included both textural weaving and macramé-knotted and interlooped, hanging sculptural forms.

Vignette 3: An Abundance of Objects

The third exhibition, An Abundance of Objects, will combine baskets, sculptures, and ceramics by more than three dozen artists from the US and abroad. Sharktooth is collaborating with Common Loom to create a month-long event, ‘beyond repair.’ This event showcases the process of unraveling a worn-through rag rug from Sharktooth’s collection, transforming its composition, and weaving it anew at Common Loom. Throughout, we will document our process and share each step in the rag rug’s renewal.

Follow our process online, visit us at Sharktooth during September shop hours, and join us on September 30 for a celebratory reception and viewing of our transformed rag rug alongside beautiful, utilitarian antique rag rugs from Sharktooth’s collection.

Rag rugs have been a key part of domestic recycling systems for much of their history. After a rug’s warp has worn through, its fabric weft can often be salvaged and woven anew. This process extends the life of the materials and offers an intimate lens into the life of the original weaver. ‘beyond repair' invites us to consider themes of regeneration, transformation, and renewal alongside the ethics of stewardship, care, and repair.

Hankaniemi continues to embroider your Sour Word contributions. Over 400 cathartic bad words were submitted by visitors during her Sour Curtain exhibition at the gallery in June 2023.

The work confronts the viewer with unrealistic expectations imposed in women to perform laborious domestic activities with a smile. It's a vessel for a quiet tantrum, all the while keeping up appearances.

The symbol of the hand appears as an expression of human consciousness. Hands have the capacity to sculpt, mold, and weave the world we inhabit but also to unravel and destroy. In this duality, hands can reshape and react to our surroundings. Making transforms both states of matter and the mind. It is an act of being present and active in the world. When these hands become intertwined and fused with other hands, they build a network, and from this network stems collective consciousness. The performative represents a unique collaboration involving four contemporary dancers who have no prior rehearsal together. The central element driving the interaction among the actors is the use of the glove. This glove serves as a tool to guide their movements and engagements. When their fingers become braided, it triggers a transformative shift in how the bodies interact with each other.

"Montaña: a refuge to settling in" is a ceremonial journey. It utilizes deliberate textiles and alchemical methodologies to explore our connection to existence and affinity. Seamlessly intertwining textile craftsmanship, mundane sounds, mythology, and childhood memories, the performance becomes an ode to life's intricate fabric. Rooted in the dynamic relationship between evolving identity and one's homeland, the performance draws inspiration from the Andes Mountains, expressed through deliberate movements and narratives. Comparable to a cherished "hogar" or the comforting "ruana," the performance fosters a sense of unity and belonging, mirroring the essence of indigenous heritage.

The Visual Art Center of New Jersey presents the work of Elana Herzog in the Art Center's Main Gallery. The exhibition: Ripped, Tangled, and Frayed (September 29th, 2023 - February 4th, 2024) will feature stunning mixed textile works ranging from raw and threadbare fabric vestiges to plush floral piecework embellished with embroidery and applique. Since 1997, the artist has been fascinated by vintage chenille, which she rips, sews, staples, suspends, and occasionally adorns with beadwork. Exhibition highlights include her signature stapled works, which involved deconstructing and embedding textiles seamlessly into the gallery walls. Herzog also showcases recent large-scale wall pieces, a new direction in sewing, combining, and accumulating different fabrics sourced from her extensive travels. Finally, a site-specific floor installation, Felled, features cut logs incised with fabric extending from the Main Gallery to the building’s exterior. Through artworks spanning from 1995 to the present, this exhibition reflects the breadth and depth of Herzog’s innovative engagement with textiles.

The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey nurtures the capacity for personal expression, expands the creative experience, and fosters stronger communities by empowering people to see, make, and learn about art. In December 2023 I will have an exhibition "Reaching Hands". I am working on my knitwear collection of sweaters, accessories and knitted jewelry with collaboration of Japanese ceramic artist. The round shapes like pom pons, polka dot patterns and shape of hands like glove/pockets, mittens are incorporated in knitwear. Reaching hands through the globe for collaborations and creativity is a concept of the exhibit. For my jewelry pieces I am using round ceramic tiles for embellishment of knitted bracelets, bags, necklaces.

In this event, I would be very happy to share my work process of creating this collection with textile artists. The knitwear exhibition is taking place in December 2023 in small gallery of Kyoto, Japan. I will post the link to live event on my social media GalinaCarrollDesigns. Next year I would like to bring Japanese textile artists to New York and share their work here with possible collaboration between two countries.

Two Grey Hills Tapestry Weaver Lynda Teller Pete and Barbara Teller Ornelas are Tabaaha (Water Edge Clan) and born for the To’aheedliinii (Two Waters Flow Together Clan). Lynda and Barbara were raised along with their siblings at the Two Grey Hills Trading Post. Barbara and Lynda draw on their family and clan connections to offer insight into the world of Navajo rugs. Join us for this special event with two world renowned Diné artists and learn how their creative practice is preserving their cultural craft for future generations.

Barbara Teller Ornelas (Diné) is a fifth-generation master Navajo weaver and culture bearer who sold her first rug when she was only 10 years old. Her father Sam Teller (1918–2000) was a Diné (Navajo) trader for 32 years and her mother, Ruth Teller (1928–2014), was a weaver, gardener, quilter, and photographer. When Ornelas was 10, her paternal grandmother dreamt that her granddaughter would become a great weaver who shared their traditions around the world. Fifty-six years later, Ornelas has not only honed her artistry as a Two Grey Hills weaver but shared it with audiences all over the world in the form of workshops, lectures, and exhibitions. In 2023, Barbara was awarded the United States Artists Fellowship in Traditional Arts.

Lynda Teller Pete (Diné) is an award-winning fifth-generation weaver who is best known for using a traditional Two Grey Hills regional style. The belief that beauty and harmony should be woven into every rug was instilled in her from the age of six, when Pete was officially introduced to weaving. Along with her weaving, she collaborates with art centers, guilds, museums, universities, and other venues to educate the public about Diné (Navajo) history and the preservation of Navajo weaving traditions. Together with her sister Barbara Teller Ornelas, she wrote Spider Woman’s Children: Navajo Weavers Today (2018), the first book written about Diné weavers by Diné weavers since the time of Spanish and colonial contacts, as well as How to Weave a Navajo Rug and Other Lessons from Spider Woman (2020). Pete is the Director of Equity and Inclusion at the Textile Society of America and a 2022-2023 Luce Indigenous Knowledge Fellow.

Rachel Doriss, VP and Design Director, will share her process of designing a textile—from the spark of inspiration (often from unexpected places) to hand-drawn artwork and the many production techniques that can be used to achieve the final result. Pollack is a boutique design company, specializing in unique, innovative designs, and using a large and varied tool box of artistry, fiber contents, yarns and weaving techniques. The company got its start 30 years ago with the launch of its collection of textiles targeted to the high-end interiors market. Since then, the line has flourished and expanded into the contract, residential and hospitality markets, as a more decorative aesthetic was combined with the company’s solid technical foundation. The wide-ranging collection is celebrated for fabrics that easily cross the lines of these individual segments–fabrics marked by sophisticated design, intricate construction, nuanced color palettes and timeless style.

Colectivo de Palabreo presents “Interwoven Narratives”, a participatory and interdisciplinary online “palabreo” that brings to light the interconnectedness among creative practices linked with today’s global agenda. The featured panelists are Piedad Aguilar, Juan Pablo Aschner, Ana Gutierrez, Zayaan Khan and Arcenio Moya.

The event will be divided into two sessions and will include a conversation (Palabreo) with a guest moderator at the end of each session. During the intermission of each day’s session, we will showcase a hands-on demonstration led by two skilled weavers. They will guide us on a voyage to our origins and the intrinsic bond we share with craftsmanship and creation.
This event shatters the boundaries of a traditional conference setup and the formality of screens by establishing transnational connections through a non-structured process called “palabreo”.

Zayaan Khan (Seed Bibliotek) Cape Town: As an artist,consultant, researcher, and food transformer, Zayaan’s work finds a resting place through food as a means of understanding the world, particularly seed, land, and our collective heritage.

Ana Maria Gutierrez (ORGANIZMO) Colombia: She discovered the power of action and community building, giving rise to Organizmo - a research center focused on regeneration and the exchange of intercultural knowledge.

Juan Pablo Aschner (Facultad de Creación) Bogota: Architect and dean of Facultad de Creacion at Universidad del Rosario, Bogota. He integrated transmedia design, as well as the incorporation of methodological and thematic resources used in social sciences, and humanities.

Arcenio Moya (Facultad de Creación) Bogota: Pioneering the idea that a master craftsman holds the same rank as any other educator, as a master craftsman of the Wounaan People he carries within him the territorial trajectories of the Chocó jungle, the rivers, and the Pacific coast.

Piedad Aguilar (BAT Textile Arte Biennale) Chile: Textile researcher, and director of Textile Arte Biennale of Chile, and Fiber Art at Universidad Catolica. She focuses on textile experimentation with her rug studio AWNW.

Andrei Fernandez (Textiles Semilla & Silät Wichi) Argentina: Curator and independent researcher, cultural manager. Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts (UNT), with studies in Social and Political Anthropology (FLACSO). She supports artists who reflect on identity and authorship. She has initiated intercultural projects that bring together artists, artisans, and activists.

We are a transdisciplinary collective of applied research founded in 2022 by Lina Celis,, Elisa Lutteral, Rubén Goméz, and León Duval. We work with the traces, renderings, representations, and relationships derived from Latinx culture in different global contexts, aiming to comprehend, expose, and communicate their impacts and extents through engagement actions among individuals, collectives, humans, more-than-humans, and communities, facilitated by the act of "palabreo" (oral communication).

In this regard, we understand "palabreo" not in its pejorative connotation stemming from the Western and colonizing world of the Americas, but rather from its American and pre-Hispanic significance, as an oral and performative means of transmitting knowledge and worldview.

Textile Showcase at C24 Gallery will be an informal tour of textile art by a number of different artists currently on view as part of a group exhibition in our Atrium space, as well as in our project space and private viewing room. Guided by Gallery Manager Deborah Oster Pannell, participants will learn more about the artists' process, craft and inspiration, in a relaxed, conversational event.

Artists include Merav Kamel & Halil Balabin, Fırat Neziroğlu, İrfan Önürmen, Micha Serraf, and Patricia Waller, representing Israel, Turkey, Zimbabwe & South Africa, and Chile, via Germany. C24 Gallery is an independent, contemporary art gallery located in Chelsea, New York. Our artists work in a variety of mediums, including painting, ceramics, photography, textile art, video and sculpture. They share a common exploration of personal and cultural identity and its relationship to history and ongoing cultural and environmental changes. At this event you will have the opportunity to view story cloths from CTP healing circles around the world. Founder and Executive Director Dr. Rachel Cohen will speak about how textile testimonials can provide a pathway for healing for survivors of human rights abuses. The exhibit amplifies the voices of women, girls, and LGBTQI people who have been silenced by systems of oppression and violence. The story cloths invite us to bear witness to their suffering, their resilience and their capacity for recovery.

The CTP approach takes inspiration from the ancient practice of making story cloths found across many cultures: Women come together to sew their 'unspeakable' stories into images in cloth. They find safety, support, community, and a vital means of self-expression. In the group therapy, they begin to experience their stories in a new way—free of stigma, shame, self-blame, guilt, and the body’s automatic response to traumatic experiences. The sewing circle becomes a community of acceptance and support for those who have been stigmatized and rejected.

As she stitches her story, one participant explains its impact: “I feel like I’ve rid myself of a heavy load, a load I carried. It’s passed now. I am getting rid of things that I had carried in my heart.”

Common Threads Project (CTP) is a non-profit humanitarian organization that uses textile work, art therapy, mind-body approaches and group trauma treatment to provide pathways for recovery for survivors of sexual violence, war and displacement. Since its founding in 2012, CTP has established healing programs for in Ecuador, Nepal, Bosnia, Democratic Republic of Congo, and in refugee communities in the US. We believe that all survivors, regardless of circumstances, deserve deeply effective and enduring recovery services.

Colectivo de Palabreo presents “Interwoven Narratives”, a participatory and interdisciplinary online “palabreo” that brings to light the interconnectedness among creative practices linked with today’s global agenda. The featured panelists are Piedad Aguilar, Juan Pablo Aschner, Ana Gutierrez, Zayaan Khan and Arcenio Moya.

The event will be divided into two sessions and will include a conversation (Palabreo) with a guest moderator at the end of each session. During the intermission of each day’s session, we will showcase a hands-on demonstration led by two skilled weavers. They will guide us on a voyage to our origins and the intrinsic bond we share with craftsmanship and creation.
This event shatters the boundaries of a traditional conference setup and the formality of screens by establishing transnational connections through a non-structured process called “palabreo”.

Zayaan Khan (Seed Bibliotek) Cape Town: As an artist,consultant, researcher, and food transformer, Zayaan’s work finds a resting place through food as a means of understanding the world, particularly seed, land, and our collective heritage.

Ana Maria Gutierrez (ORGANIZMO) Colombia: She discovered the power of action and community building, giving rise to Organizmo - a research center focused on regeneration and the exchange of intercultural knowledge.

Juan Pablo Aschner (Facultad de Creación) Bogota: Architect and dean of Facultad de Creacion at Universidad del Rosario, Bogota. He integrated transmedia design, as well as the incorporation of methodological and thematic resources used in social sciences, and humanities.

Arcenio Moya (Facultad de Creación) Bogota: Pioneering the idea that a master craftsman holds the same rank as any other educator, as a master craftsman of the Wounaan People he carries within him the territorial trajectories of the Chocó jungle, the rivers, and the Pacific coast.

Piedad Aguilar (BAT Textile Arte Biennale) Chile: Textile researcher, and director of Textile Arte Biennale of Chile, and Fiber Art at Universidad Catolica. She focuses on textile experimentation with her rug studio AWNW.

Andrei Fernandez (Textiles Semilla & Silät Wichi) Argentina: Curator and independent researcher, cultural manager. Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts (UNT), with studies in Social and Political Anthropology (FLACSO). She supports artists who reflect on identity and authorship. She has initiated intercultural projects that bring together artists, artisans, and activists.

We are a transdisciplinary collective of applied research founded in 2022 by Lina Celis,, Elisa Lutteral, Rubén Goméz, and León Duval. We work with the traces, renderings, representations, and relationships derived from Latinx culture in different global contexts, aiming to comprehend, expose, and communicate their impacts and extents through engagement actions among individuals, collectives, humans, more-than-humans, and communities, facilitated by the act of "palabreo" (oral communication).

In this regard, we understand "palabreo" not in its pejorative connotation stemming from the Western and colonizing world of the Americas, but rather from its American and pre-Hispanic significance, as an oral and performative means of transmitting knowledge and worldview.

Simone Elizabeth Saunders (she/her) is a textile artist based in Mohkinstsis – Calgary, Canada. She holds a B.F.A. with Distinction from the Alberta University of Arts in 2020. Her textiles are hand tufted in the medium of rug-making using a punch needle and tufting machine. Saunders explores themes of the diaspora, ancestorship, and Black womanhood. Her colorful textiles highlight motifs and iconography from her Jamaican heritage and engage with sociocultural factors reclaiming power from oppressive ideologies. Currently, Saunders is exploring the iconography of the famed high Renaissance era Unicorn Tapestries and Art Nouveau advertising through a contemporary Black feminist lens.

Join us for tea and a gallery talk with textile artist and designer Sugandha Gupta about her creative process and sources of inspiration. Gupta will discuss the complexities of her intersectionality as a woman of color without color, a person with a disability, and an immigrant, and share how her intersectional experiences inform her work and practice. Exploring the different ways in which information can be disseminated, Gupta emphasizes that disability is not about overcoming one’s challenges but rather about overcoming barriers set by society. Her work navigates a world that does not consider disabled bodies and minds in the design of its existence, which has led to complex layers of marginalization and reduced expectations.

Sugandha Gupta is the Assistant Professor of Fashion Design and Social Justice at Parsons School of Design. She creates multi-sensory textiles that engage audiences through their senses. Her research interests are at the intersections of social, environmental, and disability justice. Gupta also advocates for disabilities at museums, conferences, and universities. She is an established artist and designer with over 15 years of experience. Her work has been showcased at the American Crafts Council Show, Smithsonian Craft Show, Hunterdon Art Museum, NYTM, The United Nations Headquarters, and The Met. She has won prestigious awards such as Dorothy Waxman Textile Prize, CFDA Design Graduate, and International Design Award.

Additionally, as an Embroidery artist, Ramell has been making one of a kind, hand cranked, thread on fabric art for the last 5 years utilizing a 100+ year old Singer machine.

In this one-day exhibition, Aoi Yoshizawa will showcase her art and design work at the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York.

She will present her own custom looms from her long-term project I AM A WEAVER - an artistic research and technical experiment in hand weaving. In this project she has been investigating traditional weaving methods and reinterpreting them into contemporary practices. Her loom installations are created by combining different ancient techniques with various materials.

Her design work from collaborations with various companies such as the Finnish textile company Lapuan Kankurit will also be on display. Aoi's patterns and woven textiles are inspired by life in the Helsinki archipelago.

Visit the exhibition and meet Aoi - the exhibition will also be a space for discussions about her artwork and creative process.

Aoi Yoshizawa is a textile artist and designer based in Helsinki, Finland. She engages in experimental processes that apply traditional weaving techniques to contemporary woven textiles. Her artistic practice is motivated by the repetitive actions, mechanisms and time consuming nature of the interlacing technique.

Originally from Japan, Aoi has lived in Nordic countries since 2006. She graduated from Aalto University in 2015 (MA) and the Bergen National Academy of Arts in 2011 (BFA). She currently works in a studio on the small island of Harakka in Helsinki. During September and October of 2023 she is an artist in residence at the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York.
