In December 2023 I will have an exhibition "Reaching Hands". I am working on my knitwear collection of sweaters, accessories and knitted jewelry with collaboration of Japanese ceramic artist. The round shapes like pom pons, polka dot patterns and shape of hands like glove/pockets, mittens are incorporated in knitwear. Reaching hands through the globe for collaborations and creativity is a concept of the exhibit. For my jewelry pieces I am using round ceramic tiles for embellishment of knitted bracelets, bags, necklaces.

In this event, I would be very happy to share my work process of creating this collection with textile artists. The knitwear exhibition is taking place in December 2023 in small gallery of Kyoto, Japan. I will post the link to live event on my social media GalinaCarrollDesigns. Next year I would like to bring Japanese textile artists to New York and share their work here with possible collaboration between two countries.

Galina Carroll Russian/American is a knitwear designer and fiber artist. She has long and cozy relationship with textiles and fiber. Number of years she worked as a freelance and full time sweater designer for companies: Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Anthropologie, Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch and others. For last 18 years she design for private clients, her store on Etsy and knitting magazines: Vogue Knitting, Rowan, Knit 1, Creative Knitting, Knitters and other publications.

"Do we forget about the birds when planning our cities?"

Emerging textile artist, YuJei, has illuminated this critical question through her innovative artwork, "The Coexistence." This captivating piece invites us to ponder the harmonious cohabitation of humans and animals within bustling urban environments. By masterfully blending synthetic silk with intricate patterns, YuJei's creation urges urban planners to consider the needs of our feathered friends as well.

"The Coexistence" comprises knitted tapestries, a collaborative effort involving Parsons' artist, and Glory Apparel, a global leader in knitwear production. YuJei, currently a graduate student pursuing an MFA in textiles at Parsons, delves into the realm of knitting engineering through her evolutionary journey.

YuJei's visionary work initiates a visual dialogue about the expanding urban landscapes that progressively encroach upon nature's domain. Against the backdrop of urban vitality, the artwork contrasts the primal instincts of birds—often neglected in urban planning. In this portrayal, birds are granted a poignant symbolism, underscoring the necessity for inclusive city designs that recognize the rights of all living beings.

YuJei Yen is a New York-based textile artist and graduate student at Parsons for MFA Textiles. Yu Jei specializes in knitting, specifically crochet, and honed her obsession with long-hours, large-scale handmade knitting artform. Her pieces have been featured in London Fashion Week and been worn by singers on the Golden Melody Award’s red carpet. With over 5 years of industry experience, she deeply understands materials, texture, and form. YuJei's creations exude a captivating raw energy and emotion that pushes the boundaries of crochet.

“The Blanket” is a long-term project where Capucine Bourcart knits a live-size plastic blanket using the common and iconic white plastic bag with red “Thank You” lettering. She has been doing this since March 2020 when New York State banned plastic bags. A performance underlining how difficult it can be to change our habits. By creating an object that resembles a blanket, which traditionally offers comfort, she reveals her own struggle to stop using plastic bags in her daily life. An overwhelming number of plastic bags have been collected from Bourcart’s local supermarket. Every stitch is a reminder of our consumerist culture. Each loop represents our insatiable appetite for consumption to validate our sense of self-worth. Bourcart keeps stitching, akin to writing about the inherent selfishness that permeates our society driven by individualistic desires.

Now the blanket is 17 feet long and Bourcart has used approximately 500 plastic bags. The question is how long will the blanket be once she uses up all the plastic bags she has hoarded? This uncertainty keeps Bourcart knitting, much like writing lines without an end.

Bourcart has been living in the United States since 2006, after growing up in France. ​
In her current multidisciplinary work with textiles, Bourcart uses unconventional materials such as cat fur, lint, plastic bags and soil and elevates them into 2D and 3D objects, installations, and performances. She converts these materials through techniques such as knitting, felting or embroidery.

Bourcart's work has been exhibited internationally in numerous galleries and art venues in the US as well as in Europe. Bourcart was invited to participate in several art fairs including Art on Paper and Art Wynwood. She won the Paula Rhodes Memorial Award for exceptional achievement in Fine Arts, School of Visual Arts in 2023. She was also awarded numerous grants such as Lower Manhattan Cultural Council grants, Uniqlo Park Expressions grant, and The Puffin Foundation grant. Currently, Bourcart has a MFA from the School of Visual Arts.
